Moore Renzo
Dan Moore Renzo Spiteri

A chance meeting at an international percussion festival in Beijing, China, brought Maltese multi-percussionist Renzo Spiteri and American marimba/vibraphone artist Dan Moore together for the first time. In January 2007, the Intersections Duo successfully launched the collaboration, performing three sold-out concerts to audiences in Malta’s capital city of Valletta. Both Moore and Spiteri are avid collectors of music and instruments from around the world. Concerts feature groove-based improvised music with sampled sounds of Chinese hutongs, all-but-forgotten folk songs, and percussion instrument oddities woven into the fabric of the music.

Maltese multi-percussionist Renzo Spiteri has performed with artists from across the globe including: Mercan Dede (Turkey), N’faly Kouyaté (Rep. of Guinea), Mousse Ndaiye (Senegal), Trilok Gurtu (India), Joji Hirota (Japan), Yelemba D’Abidjan (Ivory Coast), Nitin Shankar (India), and Michael Alcorn (N. Ireland). His music has been featured on MTV and BBC radio, and in art exhibitions in Malta, Florence, and Tokyo.

Dan Moore is professor of music and director of the percussion program at the University of Iowa. As a performer, he embraces many musical styles while performing with new acquaintances and old friends from around the world. Moore enjoys collecting folk melodies and sounds in his travels and adapting them to his very personal approach to the marimba and vibraphone. Moore currently serves as chair of the PAS Percussion Ensemble Committee and on the PAS Board of Directors.
